The Sioux Falls Health Department provided an update on food inspection numbers in the city and their expectations for the summer. Dominic Miller, the environmental health manager, emphasized that health inspectors aim to partner with food establishments rather than simply enforce regulations. Their goal is to help businesses serve safe food and ensure that customers have a positive experience.

In Sioux Falls, there are nearly 800 licensed food establishments, with 1,799 inspections conducted at the end of 2023. Restaurant inspections constitute only 40 percent of the health inspectors’ responsibilities. They also handle code enforcement, regulate in-home daycares, collaborate with law enforcement on noise complaints, and inspect tattoo and lodging establishments. Each food establishment is inspected at least twice a year to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Mobile food trucks operating in Sioux Falls hold a South Dakota Mobile Food Service license issued by the SD Department of Health, enabling them to vend statewide. To operate within the city limits, vendors must obtain a mobile vending license. Last year, over 50 food trucks completed this process with the police department. Approximately 35 to 40 food truck events are expected to occur in Sioux Falls this summer. Food scores for establishments can be found on siouxfalls.gov.

The Sioux Falls Health Department’s proactive approach to food safety and partnership with businesses aims to create a positive environment for both establishments and customers. Their efforts to ensure compliance with health regulations and codes contribute to the overall well-being of the community.
