On Thursday, the Slovenian government announced a decree recognizing the State of Palestine, which is set to be approved by Parliament by mid-June. Prime Minister Robert Golub emphasized that this decision is part of the government’s efforts to address the ongoing situation in Gaza promptly. The final decision may be made before the June 13 deadline.

In March, a group of EU countries including Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, and Malta stated their readiness to recognize a Palestinian state once certain conditions for statehood are met. Golub highlighted that progress in peace talks, the release of hostages, and reforms within the Palestinian Authority will be closely monitored, potentially speeding up the recognition process.

Slovenia called on Israel to cease its attack on Gaza and warned against threatened military action in the southern city of Rafah, citing humanitarian concerns. Foreign Minister Tania Faillon expressed her support for the recognition of a Palestinian state, signaling a significant step forward.

The decree must be approved by a simple majority in the 90-seat parliament, where Golub’s center-left coalition holds 51 seats. Recent polling showed that around 60% of Slovenians back the recognition of a Palestinian state, while 20% oppose it. Student protests advocating for recognition have also started at the University of Ljubljana, underscoring public interest in the issue.
