Today, we are organizing the schedule for the next 3 days to cover part of the long weekend. We will plan an additional 3 days tomorrow. I had the role of Geology Science Theme Lead today, and it was quite challenging to fit everything into the plan while ensuring we stayed within our power constraints.

On the first day, Curiosity will gather data using ChemCam and Mastcam on a small patch of sand to assess its composition and morphology. After that, we will drive further to the southwest and capture some Navcam images to prepare for future targeting. We will also conduct the first change detection experiment to monitor sand movement in a small sandsheet.

The second day will involve environmental monitoring activities to assess the composition and opacity of the atmosphere using ChemCam and Mastcam. In the morning of the third day, we will use Navcam to monitor the atmosphere and search for dust devils. In the afternoon, we will continue the change detection experiment to look for ripple movement and acquire another Mastcam mosaic of the dune to our west to study ripple morphology. Additionally, we will perform ChemCam calibration activities, a Mastcam mosaic of the local bedrock, a clast survey, and a Navcam atmospheric observation.

Throughout the plan, REMS will be conducting observations to assess wind speeds as we monitor the dunes. Adding to the complexity of the plan, CheMin will dump the “Greenhorn” sample and analyze an empty cell in preparation for upcoming sampling. After a busy schedule over the holiday, Curiosity will need some time to rest and recharge. Safe travels, Curiosity!
