The South Korean science and information technology minister emphasized the importance of global cooperation for the successful development of AI. The AI summit in Seoul, co-hosted with Britain, addressed concerns such as job security, copyright, and inequality. Sixteen tech companies signed an agreement to develop AI safely, and another pledge was signed to use methods like watermarking to identify AI-generated content.

Ministers and officials from various countries discussed cooperation between state-backed AI safety institutes to regulate the technology. AI experts welcomed the initial steps towards regulating AI but emphasized the need for enforcement of rules. They stressed the importance of obligatory safety standards for AI services before market release to prevent potential harm and public backlash.

The next in-person global AI summit is expected to take place in France, likely in 2025. South Korea’s science minister acknowledged that laws often lag behind technological advancement like AI. He emphasized the need for flexible laws and regulations to ensure the safe use of AI by the public. Collaboration and discussion at future AI summits are expected to focus more on innovation, inclusivity, and the establishment of AI safety institutes to further enhance AI safety talks.
