Quan, a 12-year-old boy from Ho Chi Minh City, was experiencing difficulty breathing, swelling all over his body, a sudden weight gain of 4 kg in three days, and high blood pressure. Upon visiting the doctor, he was diagnosed with acute glomerulonephritis caused by streptococcus bacteria.
Three weeks prior to his diagnosis, Quan had a fever and cough. His family initially thought it was just a sore throat and gave him fever-reducing medicine. However, Quan continued to attend school without any fever or cough symptoms. Last week, his face started to swell, he urinated less, gained weight rapidly, and experienced overall body swelling, prompting his family to take him to Ho Chi Minh City for further examination.
Upon arrival in the city, Quan began experiencing headaches and difficulty breathing, leading to emergency treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital. Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hien from the Department of Pediatrics diagnosed him with acute glomerulonephritis, noting symptoms such as rapid breathing, body edema, high blood pressure, pleural effusion, and lung damage.
Acute glomerulonephritis occurs when the kidneys are unable to filter waste and fluid properly, leading to complications like high blood pressure and difficulty breathing. If left untreated, it can result in severe consequences such as heart failure, seizures, and stroke. Treatment for Quan included diuretics, antihypertensive medications, and dietary adjustments to manage his condition.
Dr. Vu Huy Tru, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment for acute glomerulonephritis in children. Symptoms such as sudden weight gain, edema, hematuria, and increased blood pressure should prompt immediate medical attention to prevent complications like kidney failure.
