Mauricio Cuevas, defender for USA U-20 Men’s Youth National team, will not be able to participate in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup due to an ankle injury. As a replacement, Michael Halliday from Orlando City SC has been added to the World Cup 21-man roster. FIFA granted US Soccer’s request to replace Cuevas, and regulations allow an injured player to be on the roster up to 24 hours before his team’s opening game.
Halliday, who participated in the United States team that won the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship in Honduras, will be selected from a provisional roster of 55 players and subject to approval by the Games Medical Committee. He also played against France and England in USA’s training camp in Spain in March. Club-wise, Halliday has been performing well this season at Orlando City SC, appearing in eight of the team’s 12 games so far and two of the club’s Concacaf Champions League games.
The USA will be starting Group B with Ecuador on Saturday 20 May, followed by Fiji on Tuesday 23 May, and Slovakia on Friday 26 May. All three games are scheduled to kick off at 2:00 p.m. ET.
