Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the village of Kokoda in Papua New Guinea on April 23 to participate in traditional welcoming ceremonies with local residents. He was joined by Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape for a 15 km walk along the Kokoda trail to the war memorial site in Isurava town. This site was the location of a significant battle between US and Australian troops and Japanese forces during World War II, halting the Japanese advance toward Port Moresby.

The two leaders planned to commemorate Anzac Day on April 25 in Isurava, a day that honors Australian and New Zealand troops who landed in Gallipoli during World War I in 1915. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the importance of walking side by side along the Kokoda trail to symbolize the strong relationship between the two countries.

In December 2023, Australia and Papua New Guinea signed a defense agreement to strengthen their ties. Prime Minister Marape clarified that the agreement did not align Papua New Guinea with Australia and the US in their strategic competitions with China. He assured Prime Minister Albanese that the partnership between the two countries remains strong.

The joint journey along the Kokoda trail was seen as a symbolic gesture of the close relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea. Both leaders emphasized the importance of moving forward together in peace and solidarity. Prime Minister Marape expressed the desire for Papua New Guinea to continue living in harmony with its neighbors.

The visit to Isurava and the commemoration of Anzac Day highlighted the shared history and sacrifices made by both countries during times of conflict. The walk along the trail served as a reminder of the enduring friendship and support between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
