The Disappearance of Reclining Seats in Economy Class

The difference in comfort between first-class and economy passengers on flights is stark, with first-class passengers enjoying luxurious, laid-back seats while economy passengers make do with a measly few inches of seat recline. While this small amount of recline can be helpful for dozing off during a flight, it often leads to arguments with fellow passengers, spilled drinks, and even crushed laptops. Due to these issues, airlines are considering doing away with reclining seats entirely.

Over the years, personal space onboard flights has decreased, with the average seat recline shrinking from four inches to just two inches. Airlines are constantly looking for ways to reduce weight and costs, and reclining seats are a target for potential elimination. The mechanisms in reclining seats add extra weight to the plane, so opting for seats that do not recline can significantly lighten the load.

William McGee, a senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, believes that this trend of eliminating reclining seats will continue. Airlines are always seeking to reduce weight onboard to save on jet fuel costs. In addition to weight savings, reclining seats also require more maintenance, adding to the overall cost for airlines.

Low-cost carriers have already started using “pre-reclined” seats, which do not recline but are molded at a deeper angle than standard reclining seats. This could potentially become a trend for all airlines in the future. While this change may be another blow to the economy passenger experience, many may welcome it as it could reduce incidents of broken laptops and spilled drinks caused by reclining seats.

McGee acknowledges that some passengers will miss the comfort of reclining seats in economy class, but believes that the majority will be grateful to avoid the inconveniences that come with them. Overall, the removal of reclining seats may lead to a more pleasant and hassle-free flying experience for all passengers.
