A gold watch that belonged to the richest passenger on the Titanic was recently sold for 1.36 million euros at an auction in the United Kingdom. The winning bid came from an American buyer at the British auction house Henry Aldridge & Son, far exceeding the estimated value of 120-180 thousand euros. This amount surpasses the previous record set in 2013 by another item from the Titanic, a violin sold for nearly 1.3 million euros.

The watch, engraved with the initials JJA, was owned by American businessman John Jacob Astor, who tragically lost his life when the Titanic sank in 1912 at the age of 47. Astor, one of the wealthiest men of his time with a fortune equivalent to billions today, perished on the ship after helping his wife into a lifeboat. His body was recovered a week later with the 14-karat gold pocket watch among his belongings.
