The Impact of Climate Change on Human Health: A Featured Topic in Upcoming Science Lecture

“Science on the Sound” is a monthly lecture series held at the Coastal Studies Institute on the ECU Outer Banks Campus in Wanchese. The series features speakers from across the state and focuses on coastal topics in northeastern North Carolina. The next event will discuss the potential risks and hazards of climate change, presented by Dr. Alex Hodges, a clinical professor in the Department of Advanced Nursing Practice and Education at East Carolina University. The lecture, titled “Ready for Change: Building Effective Climate Readiness,” will take place on Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m.

Dr. Alex Hodges is an expert on climate change and has worked with organizations such as Americares and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her research focuses on the climate impacts in Eastern North Carolina. The presentation will offer a nurse practitioner’s perspective on climate change and its implications for primary care, as well as strategies for being better prepared for related challenges. Hodges is actively involved in providing primary care at the Community Care Clinic of Dare and serves on the Dare County Board of Health and Human Services.

The “Science on the Sound” series aims to provide diverse perspectives on coastal issues and is open to the public free of charge. The lecture will also be live-streamed on the Coastal Studies Institute YouTube channel for those unable to attend in person. This event offers a valuable opportunity to learn more about climate change and its impact on the local community.
