The Impact of Climate Change on Sports

Sports play a significant role in human culture worldwide. Whether it’s playing in a little league, shooting hoops at the park, or cheering for a favorite team, sports bring people together and provide entertainment. However, climate change is starting to impact the world of sports in various ways.

The effects of climate change can be seen in ski resorts where warming temperatures are leading to unfavorable snow conditions. Additionally, rising temperatures put athletes at risk of heat stroke during outdoor competitions. With sports being a trillion dollar industry globally, and providing jobs, fitness, and health benefits to billions of people, it’s crucial to address the impacts of climate change on this aspect of our lives.

Dr. Madeleine Orr, a sports ecologist and author of Warming Up: How Climate Change is Changing Sport, sheds light on how our warming climate is altering the way we play sports. In an interview with guest host Sophie Bushwick, Dr. Orr discusses the changes happening in sports due to climate change and proposes ways to mitigate these impacts. By understanding how climate change is affecting sports, we can work towards solutions to ensure the continuation of this important aspect of our culture.
