Boston Dynamics has unveiled a new version of the Atlas humanoid robot that is fully electric and designed for real-world applications, marking the end of the hydraulic version that has been in use for the past decade. The new electric Atlas maintains its humanoid design with a head, trunk, two arms, and two legs, but features an updated body that is more agile and less bulky. According to Boston Dynamics, it is “stronger, more dexterous, and more agile” than its predecessor, with the goal of being able to perform tasks that are considered boring, dirty, or dangerous in real-world scenarios.

The electric Atlas is equipped with new artificial intelligence and machine learning tools, in addition to advancements in simulation and predictive control, to ensure that it can operate efficiently and adapt to complex situations. Boston Dynamics has also taken on a new commercial approach by partnering with a select group of clients to further enhance the robot’s capabilities. Hyundai is one of the first clients announced, and they will be testing Atlas in car manufacturing.

This latest version of Atlas comes after years of advancements in mobility, perception, and robotic strength, allowing the robot to perform impressive feats like jumps and somersaults in the practice of ‘parkour’. The new electric version represents a significant step forward in robotics technology and showcases Boston Dynamics’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with humanoid robots.
