A 9-year-old girl in Hanoi had been experiencing severe headaches for several weeks. After a visit to the doctor, it was discovered that she had a large meningioma, a type of tumor, in a dangerous location that was invading the surrounding area. Urgent surgery was deemed necessary to remove the tumor.
The tumor was located in the midline, spreading to both sides of the cerebral hemispheres and blocking the venous sinuses. The team of doctors from the Department of Neurosurgery at Hospital E planned a treatment approach that involved embolization followed by tumor surgery to minimize the risk of blood loss during the procedure. During the surgery, doctors utilized microsurgical glasses, nerve localization, and nerve fiber bundles to carefully identify and remove the tumor while avoiding damage to healthy brain tissue and reducing complications. After an extensive 8-hour surgery, the entire tumor and infiltrated tissue were successfully removed, preserving important nerve functions and limiting blood loss.
Following the surgery, the young girl showed positive signs of recovery. She was alert, eating well, sleeping normally, and not paralyzed. Subsequent tests confirmed that there were no remaining tumors or lesions 10 days after the procedure. Meningiomas account for a significant portion of intracranial tumors, and timely surgery can often lead to a cure.
