Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has seen an increase in the number of hemorrhoid patients in the first three months of the year, with about 900 patients seeking treatment. This number represents a significant increase from the same period last year, with 50% of the patients being office workers. Doctor Nguyen Van Hau from the Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery highlighted that many patients only seek medical attention when their symptoms worsen. Hemorrhoids, while not malignant, can greatly impact one’s quality of life due to symptoms like itching and pain in the anus, particularly during defecation.

The prevalence of hemorrhoids among office workers can be attributed to long hours of sitting and lack of physical activity during the day. Prolonged sitting can lead to poor blood circulation, increasing pressure on the veins in the anus and rectum, creating favorable conditions for hemorrhoids to develop and worsen. Additionally, office workers often experience high levels of stress, which can contribute to constipation and further exacerbate hemorrhoidal symptoms.

Unhealthy eating habits, such as consuming fast food high in fat and low in fiber, can also increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Doctor Hau emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber and staying hydrated to prevent constipation. It is crucial for individuals experiencing symptoms like itching, discomfort, bleeding, or pain to seek medical attention promptly to receive appropriate treatment and prevent complications.

Treatment options for hemorrhoids range from medication and lifestyle adjustments for mild cases to surgical procedures for severe conditions. Doctor Hau advised office workers to incorporate regular breaks for standing and walking, drink an adequate amount of water daily, practice stress-relief techniques, and maintain a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of hemorrhoids. By adopting these habits, individuals can proactively manage their health and prevent the worsening of hemorrhoidal symptoms.
