The risky complications of chronic enteritis

Chronic progressive enteritis poses serious complications for individuals, including intestinal obstruction, ulcers in the small intestine or colon, and colon cancer. This condition, also known as Crohn’s disease or chronic regional enteritis, is an autoimmune disease caused by inflammation in the digestive tract. While it can affect any part of the digestive tract, it is more common in the ileum, cecum, small intestine, and colon. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and severe malnutrition.

Dr. Le Thanh Quynh Ngan, Head of the Gastroenterology Department at the Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, explains that in the early stages of the disease, symptoms may mimic those of other acute inflammatory gastrointestinal conditions. As the disease progresses, patients often experience severe weakness, pain, and possible complications that significantly impact their health.

Complications of chronic enteritis include bowel obstruction, ulcers in the small intestine and colon, fistula formation, anal fissures, colon cancer, deep vein thrombosis, and malnutrition. The disease can lead to dangerous consequences if not managed properly, including the development of fistulas which are difficult to treat and can spread infection. Additionally, individuals with Crohn’s disease are at an increased risk of developing digestive and colon cancer, particularly if the inflammation persists.

Treatment approaches for chronic enteritis vary depending on the severity of the disease and may include dietary changes, medical therapy, and, in some cases, surgery. Nutritional management is crucial for all patients with Crohn’s disease, regardless of their treatment regimen. Limiting dairy and fatty foods is recommended, along with maintaining a balanced diet to prevent malnutrition. Medical treatments aim to control symptoms and prevent recurrences, while surgery may be necessary in severe cases or when complications such as abscesses or strictures develop.

Dr. Quynh Ngan emphasizes the importance of early prevention strategies, lifestyle modifications, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and maintaining a clean living environment to reduce the risk of complications associated with chronic enteritis. By proactively managing the disease and adopting healthy habits, individuals can improve their quality of life and reduce the likelihood of serious complications.
