The Robotic Surgery Program at Stroger Hospital, launched by Cook County Health, is set to revolutionize surgical procedures for patients in need of surgery. The program focuses on using robotic surgery, which is often considered better for patients due to being less invasive and performed through small incisions. This approach aims to ensure that all patients, regardless of age, race, wealth, or status, have access to the highest quality medical care.
At Stroger Hospital, more than 10,000 surgeries were performed last year, and with the expansion of the robotic surgery program next year, over 500 robotic-assisted surgeries are expected to take place in 2024. Robotic surgery helps with complex operations by reducing blood loss, post-operative pain, scarring, and complications, as well as shortening recovery time. Dr. Alexander Sauper, Chair of Surgical Critical Care, explains that the robotic system provides surgeons with a high-definition and magnified view of the surgical field, allowing for smaller, more precise cuts with instruments that mimic a human hand but with a greater range of motion.
The da Vinci® surgical system will be used for a variety of surgeries at Stroger Hospital, including general, cardiothoracic, colorectal, head & neck, gynecological, and urological procedures.
