Rapid City is the first stop for Dilawar Syed on the U.S. Small Business Administration’s nationwide tour, where he serves as the organization’s Deputy Administrator. Syed highlighted the importance of supporting small businesses in rural communities like those in South Dakota, stressing that these areas are often overlooked in terms of investment and resources. He emphasized the need for equity across all regions, both rural and metro, and the significance of intentional efforts to bridge the gap between them.

Syed mentioned that a key step in addressing these disparities is through legislation such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is helping to provide access to affordable internet for thousands of households and businesses in South Dakota. However, he also acknowledged that there is still much work to be done in closing the divides that exist within the country. Despite the challenges faced by many communities, Syed emphasized the resilience and determination of small business owners who strive to succeed against historic and systemic obstacles.

As part of his role, Syed travels to rural areas to meet with individuals and businesses, gaining a firsthand understanding of the specific needs and challenges they face. He noted that these interactions serve as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that everyone has access to opportunities for growth and success. By investing in these communities and supporting small businesses in rural areas, Syed believes that progress can be made towards achieving greater equity and economic development for all individuals and regions across the country.
