Ukrainian Olympic weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko killed in Ukraine war

Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who competed in the Rio Olympics, tragically lost his life on the front line, as announced by the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation on Monday. Pielieshenko, aged 30, had achieved two European championship titles in 2016 and 2017. In the Rio Olympics in 2016, he finished in fourth place in the 85kg category. However, his career was halted in 2018 due to a positive test for a masking agent.

The Federation released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the loss of the great Ukrainian sportsman. Ukrainian weightlifting team coach Victor Slobodianiuk also paid tribute on Facebook, stating that Pielieshenko “died a hero defending Ukraine.” The Ukrainian Olympic Committee recalled that Pielieshenko had joined the armed forces at the beginning of the Russian offensive in February 2022.
