The University of Michigan Health system is planning to purchase vacant land at the former Kmart headquarters in Troy to build a multi-specialty facility. The property, located at 3100 West Big Beaver Road, spans 7.8 acres and is being purchased for $4.42 million from Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC. Pending approval from the University of Michigan Board of Regents, the purchase is expected to move forward at the upcoming meeting.

The new facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services, aiming to expand specialty clinical services and patient access in Oakland County. Michigan Medicine’s CEO, Marschall Runge, stated that this investment is just the beginning of a broader presence in southeast Michigan, with plans to create a network of care that allows easy access to world-class healthcare for residents statewide.

The former Kmart headquarters has remained vacant for over 15 years and was set for demolition last fall. The University of Michigan Health system’s purchase is seen as a way to bring their expertise to a new community of patients, offering easier access to their innovative clinical programs, including multi-disciplinary cancer care. David Miller, the president of U-M Health, expressed excitement about the expansion into Troy, anticipating the new facility’s role in bringing advanced and innovative clinical programs to the region.
