The United States made a significant decision that could have long-term consequences, even though immediate effects may not be apparent. A senior American official revealed that the US had halted a weapons delivery to Israel after expressing concerns about Israel’s plans for an offensive in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip. The shipment included 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs. The official stated that a final decision on the shipment had not been made yet.

The US’s opposition to the Israeli offensive in Rafah, particularly due to concerns for civilian safety, was reiterated by President Joe Biden to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Discussions between Israeli and US officials on the matter were ongoing, but had not fully addressed the concerns raised by Washington. The US State Department was also reviewing other arms transfers, including precision bombs like JDAMs.

The decision to suspend the weapons delivery sparked a reaction from Republican opponents in the US, with the Speaker of the House denouncing any measures to limit military aid to Israel. Meanwhile, tensions escalated as the Israeli army deployed tanks in Rafah, closed border crossings, and took control of key access points for humanitarian aid, actions deemed “unacceptable” by the United States.

Despite international pressure, Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu remained steadfast in defending Israel’s right to protect itself, even if it meant standing alone. The situation remains tense as discussions continue between US and Israeli officials on how to proceed in the face of the escalating conflict in Rafah.
