The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that agricultural producers can now apply for enrollment in a special Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) sign-up. The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is investing nearly $11 million in the EQIP – Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative (MBRI) to support agricultural producers in protecting and improving natural resources and habitats for migratory birds and other avian species in specific regions.
In Arkansas, NRCS will provide up to $4 million in financial assistance in fiscal year 2024 for the MBRI program. This initiative aims to create habitat on private lands in Arkansas’s flyways to sustain migratory bird populations, promote climate resiliency, and enhance carbon stewardship on working lands, according to NRCS Arkansas State Conservationist Mike Sullivan. By providing more nesting areas, food sources, and resting places for migratory birds, the program will improve habitat for wildlife and promote natural resource conservation.
In addition to Arkansas, agricultural producers in California, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas can also receive assistance through the EQIP – MBRI program. Applications for financial assistance must be submitted by May 17, 2024, to be considered for funding this year. While applications for EQIP financial assistance are accepted throughout the year, specific program deadlines are in place for ranking and funding opportunities within each state.
