There will be no hearing with the VRT leadership in the Flemish Parliament as the majority party N-VA and opposition party Vlaams Belang were absent for an extra session of the Media Committee on Friday. This resulted in no quorum and therefore no vote could be taken on the request for a hearing. On Thursday, there was a controversy involving the public broadcaster with a new TV series called ‘Knappe heads’ being created in consultation with the cabinet of Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) and financed by them. Critics within the VRT feel that this program has been pushed through in a forceful manner and crossed a line. Flemish Media Minister Benjamin Dalle responded by saying there is no indication of political interference in VRT programs.

This incident is not the only one in recent weeks and months, with issues ranging from the cancellation of a documentary series about Bart De Pauw to calls for explanations from the VRT leadership, especially CEO Frederik Delaplace. However, attempts to summon the VRT top have not yielded results as N-VA and Vlaams Belang did not show up for the Media Committee session. Opposition parties Groen and Vooruit are disappointed by this obstruction, with Commission chairman Meyrem Almaci calling it a mockery after a series of problematic issues.

Vooruit MP Katia Segers questions N-VA’s motives in stopping the hearing and boycotting parliament’s control function. The VRT has faced several controversies recently, and there is a strong desire for CEO Delaplace to provide explanations in parliament. Despite the disappointment from opposition parties, the hearing will not take place due to the absence of key parties.
