White House refuses Hamas offer of five-year ceasefire with Israel

National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby made it clear that the United States will not support the creation of a Palestinian state under Hamas control. This statement was in response to an interview given by Khalil al-Hayya to the Associated Press. Al-Hayya is a member of the Hamas politburo and serves as the deputy of Hamas leader Yahya Sinouar in Gaza. He is also part of the Hamas delegation involved in negotiations with Israel through intermediaries.

During his interview with the AP, al-Hayya, who was in Istanbul at the time, expressed Hamas’ proposal to establish an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, along with the return of Palestinian refugees in exchange for a truce lasting at least five years. He mentioned that if these conditions were met, Hamas’ militant wing would be disbanded, and the organization would transition into a political party. Despite the destruction caused by attacks on October 7 in the Gaza Strip, al-Hayya claimed that the operation was successful in rekindling international attention on the Palestinian issue.

He emphasized that Hamas leaders have the power to end the conflict immediately by adhering to ceasefire agreements and releasing hostages.
