Apple has resumed discussions with OpenAI, the developer of the generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT, to incorporate AI-based features in their next iPhone model. The company has been working on deploying AI-powered functions on its phones for some time and has even started negotiations with Google to include Gemini through software updates by the end of the year. Bloomberg first reported on this development in mid-March, revealing that Apple had reinitiated talks with OpenAI after initially pausing them earlier in the year.

According to Bloomberg, the two companies have resumed discussions and are now negotiating the terms of a potential agreement to integrate OpenAI features into the next version of their mobile operating system, iOS 18. This marks a reopening of talks that had previously made minimal progress. The next iPhone operating system is expected to incorporate features based on Apple’s large language model (LLM) and may also include a ‘chatbot’ similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool.

In addition to OpenAI, Apple has also been in contact with other AI companies such as Anthropic, the developer of generative AI models Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Opus. These collaborations indicate Apple’s efforts to enhance their AI capabilities and provide innovative features to users.

Overall, Apple’s renewed discussions with OpenAI and other AI companies reflect their commitment to integrating advanced technologies into their products and delivering a more seamless and engaging user experience.
