In a surprising move during the 2024 NFL draft, two top AFC teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills, made a trade late in the first round. The defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs, traded up from the 32nd pick to the 28th pick with the Bills. With the 28th overall pick, the Chiefs selected Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver from Texas who holds the title of fastest player in Scouting Combine history after running a 4.21-second 40 yard dash in February.

Worthy’s incredible speed will make him a major playmaking threat alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs’ offense. Additionally, he will provide a hedge against any potential suspension for Rashee Rice. It is surprising that the Bills, who could use a big-play wide receiver like Worthy, opted to trade the pick to the Chiefs instead of selecting him themselves. However, Chiefs fans are undoubtedly excited about the added speed and playmaking ability that Worthy will bring to their team.

This trade highlights the competitiveness and strategic maneuvering that takes place during the NFL draft, as teams look to secure the best talent available to improve their chances of success. It will be interesting to see how Worthy’s speed and skills impact the Chiefs’ offense in the upcoming season and if he can help them defend their Super Bowl title.
