Bexar County commissioners recently approved a $5 million investment into a new sports facility at UTSA that will be accessible to residents. The facility, known as the “Roadrunner NEST,” which stands for “Nurturing Elite Sports Talent,” will be built on the main campus starting in January 2025. UTSA officials expect the $35 million facility to be completed by December 2026. In addition to the county’s investment, the City of San Antonio is also contributing an equal amount towards the project.

County Commissioner Grant Moody emphasized that the Roadrunner NEST will be available for use by everyone in the community, not just UTSA students. He highlighted the importance of joint use opportunities for the county and city. The facility will be open to the public for competitive events and youth sports, while also serving as the home for UTSA’s men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams.

UTSA has committed to covering the facility’s annual operating costs of $500,000 once it is completed. With approximately half of UTSA’s students being Bexar County residents, the new sports facility is expected to benefit a significant portion of the local community.
