The company, founded in 1883, celebrated its 140th anniversary last year. Gustaf DeLaval, the company’s founder, invented the cream separator in 1883, which was a significant innovation at the time. DeLaval was known for inventing various machines for automated milking over the years. The company obtained its first VMS batch milking system robot patent in 1983, marking a significant milestone in automated milking technology.
During the 1980s, there were doubts about the need for automated milking, as traditional farming practices relied heavily on manual labor. However, DeLaval recognized the importance of transitioning to modern farming practices. The VMS batch milking system was initially designed to help family farms remain sustainable by reducing the time spent milking cows. This shift allowed farmers to focus on other duties on the farm and manage their operations more efficiently.
