The extraordinary meeting of the heads of State and Government of the European Union this Wednesday in Brussels was initially planned to focus on the economy. However, the volatile international situation, particularly the fear of further escalation in the region following Iran’s recent attack on Israel, has disrupted these plans. Concern about a rise in violence overshadowed the first day of meetings among the Twenty-seven leaders. Discussions on extending sanctions against Tehran and calls for restraint from Israel have taken center stage in these discussions.

One of Israel’s closest allies within the EU, Germany, has expressed the importance of de-escalation following the Iranian attack. Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz emphasized the need for restraint from Israel to avoid exacerbating tensions in the region. Other European leaders, including Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, have echoed similar sentiments, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further conflict.

The EU has strongly condemned Iran’s attack and is considering imposing more restrictive measures against Tehran, particularly regarding unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles. There is also discussion about potentially declaring the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a “terrorist organization,” although this decision is still pending legal analysis. Some EU leaders, such as the Prime Minister of Belgium, have openly supported putting the Revolutionary Guard on a sanctions list.

The meeting in Brussels will also address the initiative led by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to recognize Palestine as a State. This proposal has the support of other EU members like Ireland, who view it as a positive step towards a two-state solution. Discussions will continue during the summit to assess if other countries are willing to join this recognition of Palestine.

Overall, the focus of the EU leaders is on de-escalating tensions in the region, preventing further violence, and finding diplomatic solutions to the current situation. The meetings in Brussels will play a crucial role in shaping the EU’s response and actions moving forward.
