Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization in the US and the EU, has announced that they are discussing Israel’s new proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. The announcement comes as Egypt increases efforts to end months of war and prevent a potential Israeli attack on the southern city of Rafah, according to AP reports.

A senior Hamas official, Khalil al-Haya, mentioned that the Israeli offer is in response to one they made two weeks ago. Earlier discussions between Egypt and Israel focused on a six-week ceasefire and the release of 40 civilian and sick hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

In a separate statement, Hamas stated that the leaders of the three main militant groups operating in the Gaza Strip are discussing efforts to end the conflict. Despite calls for restraint, including from their ally the United States, Israel has been adamant about planning a ground attack on Rafah, citing the presence of Hamas militants.

Egypt has warned that an attack on Rafah could have catastrophic consequences for the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The situation remains tense as negotiations and discussions continue to try to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
