German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck arrived in Kiev on Thursday for a visit with a focus on Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, emergency aid, and strengthening the country’s economy. Habeck, who also serves as economy minister, is accompanied by a business delegation. The trip coincides with Germany’s upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin on June 11 and 12, which will be hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Upon arrival, Habeck emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in its “fight for freedom” against Russian aggression and in defense of European values. In Kiev, he is scheduled to meet with Zelensky, Deputy Prime Minister and Economics Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and Energy Minister German Galushchenko, among others. Following his time in Ukraine, Habeck will travel to Moldova to meet with Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

Moldova, a country bordering Ukraine, is also facing challenges from Moscow and is striving to join the EU. The pro-Western leadership of Moldova sees itself as threatened by Russian influence and seeks closer ties with European partners. Habeck’s visit comes at a critical time for both Ukraine and Moldova as they navigate complex political and economic landscapes. The meetings and discussions held during Habeck’s visit are crucial for strengthening ties between Germany and these Eastern European countries.
