U.S. health officials have issued a warning about counterfeit Botox injections that have made 22 people sick, with half of them requiring hospitalization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sent an alert to doctors about these cases that have been reported in 11 states since early November. The injections were given by unlicensed or untrained individuals in settings such as homes or spas. Most recipients said they received the injections for cosmetic purposes.

Six individuals were treated for suspected botulism, a serious disease caused by botulinum toxin entering the bloodstream. Symptoms of botulism include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing. Health officials emphasize the importance of receiving injections only from licensed professionals and reporting any suspected counterfeit products.

The CDC’s warning serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution when seeking cosmetic procedures and to ensure that they are done by qualified professionals. Counterfeit medical products can pose serious risks to health and safety, and it is crucial to be vigilant in protecting oneself from such dangers. By raising awareness about the dangers of counterfeit Botox injections, officials hope to prevent further incidents and protect the health of the public.
