The rapidly evolving technologies that shape our world range from generative artificial intelligence breakthroughs to advancements in robotics and manufacturing. While it is important to embrace these technological advancements, global leaders across various fields should prioritize ethics, workers’ livelihoods, and human creativity over efficiency.

Automation can bring benefits, but not at the expense of people and their jobs. A study by the McKinsey Global Institute suggests that up to 30 percent of hours currently worked across the US economy could be automated, with generative AI playing a significant role in accelerating this trend. Goldman Sachs predicts that around two-thirds of current jobs are exposed to AI automation, with generative AI potentially substituting up to one-fourth of existing work. This highlights the urgent need to support workers in adapting to the changes brought about by automation.

As college students prepare to enter the workforce, the fear of their jobs becoming obsolete due to technological advancements looms large. Instead of being replaced by technology, students should be trained to understand and utilize technology in ways that enhance their work. This emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between technological innovation and human labor in the workplace.

In addition to economic and job implications, the ethical aspects of new technologies also need to be considered. The rise of generative AI creating art and writing raises concerns about the authenticity of human creativity. These platforms often rely on existing artwork for prompts, posing legal and ethical questions about intellectual property rights and plagiarism. There is a pressing need for regulations to ensure that technological innovations do not undermine human creativity or exploit workers.

While technologies like generative AI, robotics, and automation are here to stay, it is crucial to implement regulations that protect workers and artists from being adversely affected. By prioritizing ethics, workers’ livelihoods, and human creativity, global leaders can ensure that technological advancements benefit society as a whole without compromising fundamental values.
