Hunting for Cracks on an Antarctic Ice Shelf

Scientists in the UK are currently focused on understanding the factors that lead to the formation of massive icebergs in Antarctica. These giant icebergs account for nearly half of the ice loss from the continent and play a significant role in predictions of rising sea levels. By studying a specific region in Antarctica where two mega-bergs recently broke away, British researchers hope to uncover new information about the mechanics of ice fracturing.

Through the use of drones, the scientists are scanning the area for signs of a large crack that could potentially lead to the creation of another mega-berg. This research, conducted by the British Antarctic Survey, aims to provide valuable insights into the processes that result in the formation of these enormous ice blocks. By better understanding these triggers, scientists hope to improve their ability to forecast and mitigate the impacts of rising sea levels caused by melting ice in Antarctica.
