Indian manufacturer Everest Food Products reassured consumers on Tuesday that their spices are safe for consumption after Singapore and Hong Kong raised concerns about allegedly high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide found in one of their products. Singapore had advised against using a specific spice mix for fish curries, with Hong Kong also suspending the sale of the same product, along with three other items from a popular Indian brand called MDH.

Authorities in Singapore and Hong Kong reported that the products in question contained high levels of ethylene oxide, a pesticide known to potentially lead to cancer. Singapore’s food agency urged consumers not to consume the fish curry spice mix and to seek medical advice if worried. Despite the accusations, Everest maintained that the specific item being examined was safe to consume, as exports are only cleared after receiving necessary approvals from the laboratories of the Spice Board of India.

While Everest reiterated the safety of their products, MDH is yet to respond to the allegations. The Spices Board of India has requested further details from both companies on their quality checks. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has also instructed all states to collect samples of powdered spices and conduct random testing, with a consolidated report expected in the coming weeks.

Both MDH and Everest are well-known names in Indian kitchens, serving as popular choices for spices in homes and restaurants. The companies also export their products to various countries including the US, Europe, the Middle East, and the UK. The reassurance from Everest and the ongoing investigations aim to maintain consumer confidence and ensure the safety of spice products on the market.
