Residents of Robstown and surrounding communities rely on the Johnny Calderon Building for access to healthcare services, but currently, these services are only available twice a week. Officials have recognized the need to expand healthcare services to serve those living in rural areas, and they are working towards making this a reality.

Xavier Gonzalez, the Nueces County Director of Health and Wellness, stated that increasing access to healthcare in rural areas is a priority. For over a year, Public Health Services at the Johnny Calderon Building in Robstown has only been open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, plans are in place to extend the hours of operation to Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Xavier emphasized that the goal is to provide greater access to healthcare services for those living in rural areas. Currently, residents from towns like Bishop or Banquet have to travel long distances to access healthcare services, but the expanded schedule will make it more convenient for them.

Joe Gonzalez, Nueces County Commissioner Precinct Two, mentioned that the county is finalizing a contract with a vendor to provide these health services. The Operation Health and Wellness Program has highlighted the significant need for healthcare services in rural areas, and the county is taking steps to address this need through the expanded Public Health Services.

The new schedule for the Public Health Services is set to begin on October 1st. This expansion will ensure that residents in rural areas have increased access to healthcare services throughout the week. The community has expressed a strong need for these services, and officials are working to make healthcare more accessible for all residents.
