During a proclamation event on Wednesday, May 8, Chief of Police Miguel Rodriguez urged the community to ask the hard questions and recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month locally. A survivor of emotional abuse, Patricia Limas, shared her story at the event, recounting her fourteen-year struggle and the emptiness she felt inside after enduring continuous emotional abuse.

Limas emphasized the importance of open conversations about mental health to set a positive example for her 14-year-old daughter. Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez expressed concern over rising suicide rates in the community, with 11 confirmed suicides in Laredo this year and at least 40 calls to the police department in response to such incidents.

Of particular concern to Rodriguez is the demographic affected by these tragedies, with a focus on investigating factors such as bullying, cyber-bullying, and domestic violence. Limas expressed her primary concern for her daughter’s mental health and resilience, reinforcing the importance of mental health education and support.

Support services are available for individuals facing mental health challenges, including a hotline staffed by medical professionals who can provide assistance. Recognizing the significance of Mental Health Awareness Month in Laredo, the community is encouraged to engage in open conversations and seek help when needed.
