Representative Richard White recently announced that Rowan County is set to receive over $71 million in state funding for local infrastructure and transportation improvements. A portion of this funding, $2.5 million, will be allocated to the MSU Space Science Center for the construction of the Morehead Deep Space Array. Dr. Ben Malphrus, the Executive Director of the Space Science Center, expressed excitement about the opportunities this project will bring to MSU. Once operational, the array will enhance MSU’s capabilities in operating assets both in orbit around the moon and on its surface.

Dr. Malphrus highlighted that the Morehead Deep Space Array will play a crucial role in improving the services provided by the Space Science Center to NASA and other commercial lunar ventures. This array, consisting of multiple antennas working together as a giant antenna, will allow for tracking and commanding of lunar spacecraft. The project is expected to take 24-28 months to complete, and once finished, it will serve as an Earth station for satellite mission support and a training facility for students to gain hands-on experience in space mission operations.

Overall, the Morehead Deep Space Array project will not only advance the capabilities of MSU in space exploration but also contribute to the growth and development of the local community through enhanced infrastructure and technology. The funding provided by the state will have a lasting impact on Rowan County and its residents.
