After extensive analysis and debate, the MSL project has determined that the bright object found on the ground is harmless. This conclusion has paved the way for the commencement of the highly anticipated first sample manipulation tasks. Due to the complexity of these activities, the Sol 64 plan did not accommodate any additional “opportunistic science.” The science team instead concentrated on planning activities for future sols.
Collaborating with the team responsible for long-term planning, I assisted in scheduling a ChemCam decontamination (heating) activity that is recommended to be performed on a weekly basis. It appears that Sol 66 will be suitable for this task, but as always, plans are subject to change.
