The Momentum Center, a local nonprofit, was recently honored as a Hometown Health Hero for its efforts in promoting health in the community. This recognition was part of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ 2024 Hometown Health Heroes Awards program, which acknowledges individuals and organizations that work tirelessly to improve the health of their local communities.

The MDHHS Director, Elizabeth Hertel, emphasized the importance of highlighting the contributions of those who are dedicated to public health and making a positive impact on the lives of Michigan residents. The award ceremony in Lansing on April 10th recognized the achievements of the Momentum Center and its director, Barbara Lee VanHorssen.

The Momentum Center, with locations in Grand Haven and Holland, offers a welcoming space for individuals over the age of 11 with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities. Members can participate in a variety of social and recreational activities, events, classes, meals, and interactions without fear of stigma or stereotypes.

The nomination for the Hometown Health Hero Award was submitted by Cindy Anderson, a resident of Grand Haven. Additionally, the Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force received an honorable mention for their contributions to promoting health in the community.

Barbara Lee VanHorssen, as the director of the Momentum Center, accepted the award on behalf of the organization, recognizing the dedicated efforts of healthcare professionals and advocates who strive to improve the well-being of individuals in the state of Michigan.
