Outstanding Spring Sports Athletes in Somerset County April 14-20

On Monday, Windber defeated Portage 16-0 in a baseball game with standout performances from Andrew Scalia and Lucas Oleksa. Scalia hit a grand slam and Oleksa hit a 3-run home run, contributing to a dominant win for Windber. Cole Mash, Lucas Rummel, and Dawson Himes also had strong performances, driving in runs and securing the victory for their team.

In another baseball game on Monday, Blacklick Valley narrowly defeated Meyersdale 2-1. Karter Schurg had a hit and an RBI for Meyersdale in a tough loss to Blacklick Valley. Turkeyfoot Valley secured a 7-2 victory over Calvary Christian with a standout performance from Bryce Nicholson, who pitched a complete game and allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out eight batters. Heath Nicholson, Bryce Nicholson, and Zack Ryan contributed runs and RBIs in the win.

In softball action on Monday, Meyersdale defeated Blacklick Valley 18-3 in a game where Jessica Daughton and Marcella Dupre both had standout performances for the Red Raiders. Laurel Daniels, Amber Long, and Morgan Walters also had strong games, contributing to the team’s decisive win. In track and field, Berlin Brothersvalley had a mixed day against Everett, with the girls team winning 98-50 and the boys team falling 119-30. Mikaela Glessner, Deborah Bozovich, Zoraeja Miller, Lexi Fairman, Lexi Foor, and Addisyn Glessner all had multiple wins for the Mountaineers.

On Sunday, Conemaugh Township played in the Gene Schultz Memorial Tournament, with Zack Petree delivering three hits in a 5-0 loss to Bishop McCort in the championship game. However, Conemaugh Township bounced back in the semifinals with a 13-1 win over Shanksville-Stonycreek, led by D.J. Bambino’s four hits and two RBIs. Brennan Lohr, Luke Weber, and Larry Weaver also had strong performances to secure a spot in the championship game. Despite Shanksville’s loss to United in the consolation game, Conemaugh Township showed promise in the tournament.
