Ozempic linked to worsening mood in patients, scientists provide explanation

Descriptions of the so-called “Ozempic” personality have been circulating on social networks and in the media, referring to changes in behavior seen in some individuals who take popular GLP-1 drugs for diabetes and obesity. These changes can include worsening mood, increased anxiety, feelings of depression, anhedonia (lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities), decreased libido, and reduced interest in sex.

HealthLine suggests that these changes may be related to a shift in dopamine production, the “pleasure hormone” that our brains release in anticipation of reward or pleasure. Professor Derek Daniels, who studies the effects of GLP-1 drugs on animals and their behavior, believes that these drugs may make us feel full more quickly by decreasing the sensitivity of the dopamine system. However, the exact mechanism is still unclear.

It is possible that the mood changes associated with taking GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic may simply be a result of the challenges of eating less, losing weight, and giving up favorite foods. People often use sweets as a way to soothe themselves, but the process of monitoring weight and avoiding unhealthy foods can lead to feelings of deprivation and mood swings. This could be more about overcoming addiction to sugary foods rather than a direct effect of the medication itself.

While some individuals may experience negative side effects from GLP-1 drugs, experts emphasize the proven effectiveness and safety of these medications. It is important to seek professional medical help if experiencing mental health issues while taking these drugs.
