DIY gel nails have become popular on social media with many people trying it from the comfort of their own homes. However, this practice can lead to developing a serious allergy. In a TikTok video, creator @alina.gene shared her experience of developing an acrylate allergy from doing gel nails at home, which now causes her severe pain when exposed to acrylates.

The creator advises viewers against self-applying nail polish that requires a UV light to cure. She explains that at-home use of gel nails differs from salon use because professionals have access to higher-quality chemicals and proper training to apply the products safely. @alina.gene mentions that while an allergy to gel nails or acrylates may not be life-threatening, it can hinder access to lifesaving medical care due to common medical products containing acrylates.

An allergist was consulted to provide insights into this viral video to better understand the risks associated with DIY gel nails. For more health news stories and updates, follow the KFF Health News social team on Instagram @KFFHealthNews.
