The rise of measles outbreaks in the U.S. can be attributed to the anti-vax movement, with officials declaring emergencies due to the spread of the disease. People attending events like the solar eclipse at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis may have been exposed to measles by an infectious individual who traveled from out of state. This highly contagious disease can cause symptoms in those who are not immunized against it, with the typical incubation period lasting until April 22nd.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that nearly a third of measles cases since 2020 have occurred in the past three months, making even one case considered an outbreak. While the risk to the general public is deemed “low,” it is crucial for those who suspect they may have measles to contact their healthcare provider immediately. Symptoms of measles include a distinctive rash, along with fever, cough, runny nose, and white spots in the mouth.

Individuals who have not received two doses of the measles vaccine are at higher risk of infection. Indiana recently saw its first case of measles since 2019, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of the disease. By being proactive about seeking medical care and getting vaccinated, individuals can protect themselves and others from measles outbreaks.
