Thyroiditis is a common thyroid disease with symptoms such as weight gain or loss, loss of appetite, dry skin, hair loss, and decreased ability to concentrate. Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc from Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City explains that thyroiditis can affect thyroid function, leading to overproduction or underproduction of thyroid hormones.

Thyroiditis can occur in anyone but is more common in postpartum women, especially those aged 30-50. The disease has different stages with varying symptoms. Transient hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland becomes inflamed and releases too much hormone, leading to symptoms like rapid heart rate, weight loss, and irritability.

The normal phase of thyroiditis occurs when hormone levels return to normal after hyperthyroidism, and euthyroidism may follow, where the thyroid gland returns to a recovery state with no symptoms. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is depleted of hormones, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and muscle weakness.

Thyroiditis has different forms such as acute thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and treatment varies based on the type and stage of the disease. Patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may require lifelong thyroid hormone supplements. Regular follow-up examinations are essential to monitor the condition and adjust medication as needed.

Dr. Truc emphasizes the importance of early examination and treatment for unusual symptoms to prevent complications. Regular health check-ups at least once a year are recommended. It is essential to follow the doctor’s prescribed treatment plan and not self-medicate to avoid dangerous health complications.
