Tokyo’s Haneda Airport has been named the world’s cleanest airport by Skytrax as part of their World Airport Awards. The cleanliness of the airport’s floors, seating, public areas, and restrooms played a significant role in achieving this top ranking. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, airport cleanliness has become increasingly important to travelers, with those maintaining the highest standards being featured in the best airport cleanliness results.

Aside from being named the cleanest airport globally, Haneda was also ranked as the fourth overall best airport in the world by Skytrax. Additionally, nine of the top 10 cleanest airports were located in Asia, with Haneda leading the way. Japan itself had four airports on the list, including Centrair Nagoya, Tokyo Narita, and Kansai, ranking fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively.

Seoul Incheon in South Korea secured the second spot on the list, followed by Singapore Changi in third place, and Doha Hamad in fourth. The remaining cleanest airports list was dominated by Asian airports, including Hong Kong in eighth place, Taiwan Taoyuan in ninth, and the only non-Asian airport, Switzerland’s Zurich, in tenth place.

The World Airport Awards also recognized the top cleanest airport in each region, with Vancouver in North America, Quito in South America, Juan SantamarĂa in Central America and the Caribbean. In other regions, Cape Town was named the cleanest airport in Africa, Brisbane in Australia/Pacific, Shanghai Hongqiao in China, Baku in Central Asia, and Bangalore in India and South Asia.

Overall award winners topped their respective regional categories, with Tokyo Haneda representing Asia, Zurich for Europe, and Doha Hamad for the Middle East. With over 8.5 billion passengers traveling by air each year, the cleanliness of airports has become more important than ever.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Skytrax’s World Airport Awards, which are based on customer satisfaction surveys from over 570 airports in three languages and involve travelers from more than 100 countries.
