Sol 2256: The Search for the Elusive Red Jura Persists

After a successful weekend of activities and driving, our team was excited to wake up on Sol 2256 and prepare for contact science and drilling on Mars. However, the terrain in our workspace once again proved to be unsuitable for drilling, so we set out to find a new drill target area. Our first two attempts at locating drillable red Jura were unsuccessful, leading us to try our luck at a third candidate drill location called “Region C.”

The plan for Sol 2256 includes a science block before the drive to Region C. During this time, we will collect ChemCam data on two targets: “Sandy Haven” and “Tarness Haven.” Additionally, we will use Mastcam to create a multispectral mosaic to assess for color variations that will guide us in finding the best red Jura location for drilling. The environmental team will also conduct Navcam observations to monitor the atmosphere, capturing a line of sight image and a dust devil movie.

As we drive towards Region C, we will stop halfway to assess the upcoming terrain with Mastcam and Navcam imaging. Once we reach our final parking spot, we will take additional images to evaluate the ground in front of us. These images will help us decide whether we should drill at Region C or continue our search for the ideal red Jura location. We are hopeful that this third attempt will be successful, so stay tuned for updates on our progress.
