The Alpena High School baseball team had a split against Petoskey in the Big North Conference on Tuesday. They won 2-1 in the season opener but lost 3-0 in the nightcap. The game was tied at 1-1 until the 6th inning, with both teams scoring a run. Alpena managed to take the lead in the 7th inning when Jake Zhang scored on Grant Jalema’s single, securing the win for the Wildcats. Caleb Donakowski had a hit and an RBI, dominating the game with 2 hits and 1 run, 4 walks, and 10 strikeouts.
The Hillman baseball team won big against Mio with an 18-7 and 13-2 win on Tuesday. They went 17-8 overall and 6-0 in the North Star League Little Dippers division. After both teams scored one point in the first inning, Hillman went on to score 13 points in the second inning to take the lead. Hillman’s win was propelled by Trenton Talatuta, who gave the team two hits and three RBIs. Kyler Schultz had 3 RBIs, while AJ Jones had a hit, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Braylon Furman and Evan Crane had a hit and an RBI, respectively. Jones recorded a triple and an RBI, earning the victory by giving up 2 hits and 5 runs (3 ERA), 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts.
In softball, the Hillman team continued their winning streak by beating Mio 11-0 and 16-1 on Tuesday. Nicole Barbeau played a significant role in the team’s victory, striking out 15 of the 18 batters she faced and achieving a no-hitter. Hillman’s Gretchen Weiland also contributed to the win, whiffing 15 of the 18 batters she faced in Game 2 to achieve a no-hitter. Isabel Schultz went 2-for-4, and Barbeau went 2-for-4 for 1 yard and another home run. Other hits were by Saige Frawler, Kendall Gruschke (double), Weiland, Brooke Bennett, Julia Taratuta, and Sidney Klein.
The Rogers City softball team had a split against Arkona, winning the first game 11-1 but losing the second game 5-3. In the first game, McKenna Hardys became the winning pitcher with 4 hits, 1 run, and 5 strikeouts. Brooklyn Orr had four hits at Rogers City, including two doubles and two RBIs. Chelsea Vieras had 3 hits and 1 RBI, and Curry Lord had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. The second game was won by Arcona, who came back from a 3-2 deficit with 3 goals in 3 innings to secure their victory. Mia Schopfer led Arcona with 3 hits and 1 RBI, while Bailey Goddard had 2 hits and 1 RBI.
