Mississippi State University students’ exceptional skills were recognized on a national level when three broadcasters from WMSV, MSU’s radio station, won first place for Best Sports Talk Program at the 2024 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System convention in New York City. The winning team included senior communication major Elizabeth Keen, communication graduate student Tanner Marlar, and recent graduate Aaliyan Mohammed. Their program “Maroon and White Tonight” impressed judges and showcased their talent in sports announcing.

These broadcasters took the initiative to create, produce, and host their program on WMSV after completing a pilot class in sports announcing. Terry Likes, professor and head of the Department of Communication, commended their hard work and dedication. The Department of Communication at MSU is proud of their accomplishment and recognizes them as some of the best in the country.

In addition to the Best Sports Talk Program, MSU had three more finalists recognized by IBS. Recent graduates Olivia Beck and Amelia Middleton were finalists for Best Newscast and Best Campus/Community News, respectively. The MSU TV Center was also a finalist for Best Commercial/Promotion. The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System is an organization that supports students and faculty in college and high school media outlets, with over 3,000 entries in this year’s competition.
