The City of Madison’s Economic Development Division is highlighting programs and resources offered through the Office of Business Resources as part of National Small Business Week. The Healthy Retail Access Program provides funding for businesses that increase access to affordable, healthy, and culturally appropriate food. Funds can be used for new services, equipment, building improvements, or programs in areas identified in the City’s Food Access Improvement Map to provide healthy food for the community.

One of the retailers that participated in the Healthy Retail Access Program last year was Bombay Bazaar, a grocer on S. Gammon Road offering a variety of food items from India and Southeast Asia. They received over $98,000 through the program. The City’s 2024 Operating Budget has allocated $250,000 for Healthy Retail Access Program projects this year, including capital and infrastructure grants, technical assistance, data collection initiatives, and evaluations.

Retailers or organizations working to improve food access are encouraged to apply for funding through the Healthy Retail Access Program. More information about the program and eligibility can be found on the City’s Healthy Retail Access Program page. By targeting areas in need and investing strategically, the program aims to have a positive impact on the community and support businesses providing healthy food options.
