The cost of groceries and gas has been on the rise, creating concerns for many consumers. A local teacher and college student both express difficulties in affording these essential items. New polling suggests a shift in who voters trust to handle the economy, with Joe Biden gaining ground on Donald Trump. With months to go before the election, the polls are expected to fluctuate.

Dr. Scott Huffmon, the Director of the Center for Public Opinion & Policy Research at Winthrop University, believes that voters are primarily focused on the economy. He states that this issue is front of mind for many people and both sides can take advantage of it closer to Election Day. Currently, polling in North Carolina shows Trump leading Biden by more than five points.

Some voters express that the economy and inflation are important factors in their decision-making process. However, others feel that having a sound leader who makes good judgments is more important. The May inflation report is set to be released on Wednesday, with the feds target inflation rate at 2 percent. Despite inflation holding steady at 3.5 percent, consumer spending remains consistent.

Key takeaways from the May report will be shared on the News @ Ten.
